Opening a Library

Because an Author-it Library database contains all your document components, you'll need to open your Library so that you can start work.

Note: You can only open one Library at the same time, so you'll need to close the current Library before you open another one.

Relevant User Options

There are two User Account options (Tools > Options > General) which affect how Libraries open for you:

  • The Show Open Library Dialog On Startup option.
  • The Automatically Login To Library option.

These are mentioned below.

To Open an Author-it Library

  1. Start Author-it. If the Show Open Library Dialog On Startup option is turned ON, then the Open/Create Library window appears, listing Libraries you have opened recently.

Open/Create Library window - Open Recent tab

If you see a window like this, go directly to Step 3.

  2. If the Open/Create Library window does not appear, and instead you see a blank Main Author-it window, then:
    • From the Main toolbar, choose the Open Library button.

    -OR-

    • From the Main menu, choose File > Open.

    -OR-

    • From the bottom of the Main menu, select a Library you have worked with recently, then go directly to Step 4.

      Enterprise Edition, SQL Server

Note: If you are using Author-it's Enterprise Edition with SQL Server Library databases, only those databases that were opened using Windows NT/2000 trusted connections are shown in the Most Recently Used list.

  3. Select the Library you want to open from the list.

    -OR-

To see more Libraries, select More Files... from the top of the list, then find and select a Library file.

  4. Choose the OK button. If you have the Automatically Login To Library option turned ON, then the Library opens immediately, and you are logged in with the last User Account you used with that Library. Go to Step 6.

    -OR-

If you have the Automatically Login To Library option turned OFF, then the Library Login window appears.

    Tip

If you know you'll be logging in to the same Library under the same User Account name, then you can turn on the Automatic Login feature by ticking the checkbox before you login.

    Library Login Dialog

  5. Enter your User name and Password, then choose the Login button.
  6. After verifying that your name and password are valid, Author-it opens the Library and loads its contents into the Library Explorer, ready to work with.
