Creating Table Captions

You may have a requirement to add captions to your table. There are two different approaches you can take:

  1. Use a File Object that links or embeds the table as an OLE Object.
    • Create the table in Word or Excel, and save it normally.
    • Create a File Object in Author-it, and either embed or link to the .doc or .xls file.
    • Use the File Objects caption property to add a label above or below the table.

  2. Create and use a custom style
    • Create a style in Author-it, naming it something like 'Table Caption'.

Note: Unless you also want to use the captions in your WinHelp and/or HTML outputs, make sure the style is only set to appear in Word.

    • Create the style in your Word Publishing template, customizing the numbering so that it reads Table # (where # starts with 1).

      Table Numbering in MS Word

    • Enter the caption text above or below the tables as regular topic text within Author-it, applying the new style to the caption.

Using either approach, will produce tables that are numbered sequentially in the published Word document.
