Adding a Customized HTML Help Project Template

You can use your own custom HTML Help Project template (.hhp file) to define particular options in your published HTML Help. For example, you may wish to change the Help Viewer's size and position, or add a Favorites tab to the Navigation pane.

For details on using HTML Help Workshop, you will need to consult the HTML Help Workshop documentation.

To add your own customized HTML Help Project Template:

  1. Create your custom HTML Help Project template using HTML Help Workshop, and define the required options. For detailed instructions on setting these options, refer to the Help for HTML Help included with HTML Help Workshop.

Note: The HTML Help Workshop, Windows Help Workshop, and Segmented Hypergraphics Editor are no longer distributed as part of the Author-it installation routine in an effort to reduce the download size – instead we only distribute the compilers (hhc.exe and hcrtf.exe). You can download the HTML Help Workshop from the Microsoft website.

  2. Specify the file name and path to your HTML Help Project template in the Additional Files property of your Book Object. This file must be called project.hhp.
  3. Once the template has been specified, the settings from that file will be used. Author-it will add its own settings to the file for any properties that have not been defined by the template.

Note: Author-it normally sets the default window to BODY but you can define this differently if required and include your own window definition. Author-it will still include a definition for BODY.
