Step 1 - Installing the Author-it Server and Administration Components
Before you install Author-it on each client computer, you'll need to install Author-it's server-based and administration components:
- Shared data files including Library databases and various templates are installed on the server.
- The Author-it Administrator program that you use to manage Author-it's user security and other settings is installed on the Administrator's computer.
Author-it's installation process makes installing across a network easier and more streamlined. We recommend that you complete this procedure from a client workstation that can view the server and has the appropriate rights to install programs onto it.
To Install Author-it V4 Server Components
- Close all other Windows programs. This lets Author-it update essential components which are shared by other programs.
- Run the Author-it setup program. After a few seconds the Setup Wizard appears, to guide you through the rest of the installation.

- Choose Next when you are ready to proceed with the installation.
- Enter the Author-it serial number that you have been supplied with, then choose Next to continue.

- If you are happy with the agreement, then choose Yes, I Accept This Agreement to continue the setup.

- Enter your registration details and choose Next to proceed.

- Choose the location area on the server where you intend the Shared Author-it files to be installed. We recommend that you use the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) to identify this location. It is also possible to use the traditional Windows mapped drive identifier method, for example: (F:).
- If you are going to be using Author-it on this computer, check the box to install the Author-it Client components.

- Choose Next to continue.
- If you checked the box to install the Author-it Client Components you need to confirm the location where these will be installed on your PC.

- Choose Next to continue.

- When you have completed all of the required steps, choose Next to begin the installation process. The files are then copied across to your server and/or machine.
Note for Windows 2000 Users: If your system has an older version of a particular DLL used for data access the setup program will be interrupted and you must reboot you computer. While the setup will resume installing the current component after you reboot, you will have to run netsetup.exe, which is found in the folder specified in step 5 above, again to fully complete the installation.

- The Setup Wizard tells you when it has finished installing the files and configuring your computer.

- Choose Finish to exit the Setup program.
Congratulations, the Author-it V4 Server Components are now installed. To complete the installation, you must still install the Author-it program on each computer.
