Styles in Embedded Topics

There's been a little bit of confusion recently over embedded topics appearing to lose their formatting, and how you sometimes have to reapply the style in the container topic. Let me try to explain…

The last paragraph of an embedded topic takes on the attributes of the paragraph it is embedded into. This behaviour is intentional and allows you to embed a topic inside another paragraph already containing text, or in various topics that may use different styles – and means the style used by the embedded topic should always be correct. If embedding a topic into a blank paragraph you'll often need to reapply the relevant style in the container topic to ensure you get the right formatting.

Let's look at a couple of examples:

Scenario 1: Embedding a Topic in a blank paragraph

Let's take the following embedded topic as an example:

The last paragraph marker is not included when you embed the topic, so it takes on the attributes of the paragraph in the container topic. In this case (as demonstrated below) it uses 'Body text' which was applied to the empty paragraph it was dropped into:

Embed Topic - last paragraph marker

To use the correct formatting, reapply the relevant style in the container topic. (In this case 'List Bullet 2'):

Embed Topic - reapply style

Scenario 2: Embedding a Topic in a paragraph containing text

There may often be instances when you embed a topic (such as a common string of text) inside another paragraph, rather than in an empty paragraph.

Embedded Topic - reused with different styles

The embedded topic takes on the style of the paragraph it is embedded into – meaning the same topic can be embedded in a variety of places, and uses the relevant style according to where it appears.
