Modifying Styles in Your Word Output

The formatting of how your styles appear in your printed output, is controlled by the Word publishing template which Author-it uses when it publishes your document. These styles are not exported from Author-it - rather, each Style in Author-it is mapped onto a corresponding style in the Word template. To make any changes to the characteristics of the Word output, you simply need to open the template and adjust the style formatting.

Tip
Remember when opening a template from Windows Explorer, that if you double-click the file, you will only open a document based on that template - meaning any hard work may be lost. You need to right-click and choose open - or open Word and select File > Open then navigate to the template to open it.

To Change a Style:

  1. Open the Word Publishing Template (File > Open)
  2. Choose Format > Style from the main menu
  3. Select the Style you wish to change and choose Modify
  4. Choose Format and adjust the Font, Paragraph, Tab settings etc as desired
  5. Choose OK and then Close.

Don't select Apply at this stage, or the style is applied in the template. This can cause errors and formatting problems when generating your document.

  6. Save your changes to the template and republish. The new settings are used.

You can also create new styles in this way, or use the Word Organizer feature to copy existing styles from other templates or document files.
