Inserting a Picture into a Topic
To include external files (especially graphics) in your document, you'll use a File object. Let's add a picture to a topic.

The File object is used to include any external files in your document, usually graphics. You can link or embed any pictures, OLE objects, or files created and maintained with another application. The File object defines how the external file appears in your different output formats - including scaling and final file format for graphics.
To Insert a Picture into a Topic
- Make sure the Notepad Library Folder is selected, so the new File object is created there.
- From the Book's Contents, open the To change the font style and size topic (by double-clicking it).
- We'll insert our picture between the first two paragraphs. Put the cursor at the very end of the first line, then press ENTER to create a new paragraph, ensure the cursor is now in the new paragraph.
- From the Insert menu, choose Picture..., a File open dialog appears.
- Navigate to the
Author-it\Data\Tutorial directory and open the Font dialog.gif file.
Note: If you're not sure where to find the Tutorial directory, ask your Author-it Administrator for help.
- A File Object appears, choose the General tab.
- In the Description field type
Font Dialog - In the Based on list select Embedded GIF File Template.

For more details about choosing the right template for your File objects, and for other considerations when working with graphics, read the Using Author-it Guide.
You'll notice that the template you chose has preset most of the File object's properties, so Author-it knows how to treat the picture in your different output formats. Feel free to look at the settings on the Help and HTML tabs, but please don't change any.
- Choose OK to save and close the File Object. Your picture is inserted into the topic at the cursor position.

- We don't want the list to number the picture so click on the picture, then from the Styles drop down list on the Topic Text Toolbar, select List Continue.
- Save the topic.
