Changes to the Publisher

The Author-it Publisher, previously known as Generation, is now a separate application, which can run in the background while you are still working.

Our benchmark testing has shown the new publisher to be 10+ times faster than the current publisher for all outputs. Even higher performance improvements will be seen on systems with slow or large networks or on SQL Server databases.

What's more, there is now a publishing queue facility. When you submit a job for publishing, the publisher is automatically launched to process it. While that's happening, you can queue other jobs to be automatically processed in turn. At any time, you can open the publisher queues window (Publish > Publisher Queues) to view the different states of the queued jobs.

We have made the process of publishing and viewing published outputs easier and more flexible - providing you with a host of options to work in the way that suits you.

You can publish using the following methods.

  • From the Library Explorer, by right-clicking a book, choosing Publish To, then selecting the output type.
  • From the Book Editor menu, by choosing Publish > Publish To, then selecting the output type.
  • From the Author-it main menu, by choosing Publish > Publish To, then selecting the output type to publish the currently open Book. It is disabled if there is no book open.
  • From the Author-it main menu, by choosing Publish > In Batch... or by clicking the Publish toolbar button to display a list of all books to publish like in V3. You can optionally display only books YOU have published recently.
  • By opening the Publisher directly from Publish > Start AuthorIT Publisher, then clicking the Publish... button.

You can view the outputs using the following methods:

  • From the Library Explorer, by right-clicking a Book, choosing View Published, then selecting the output. The most recently published version of any outputs are listed with the date/time published.
  • From the Book Editor menu, by choosing Publish > View Published, then selecting the output.
  • From the Author-it main menu, by choosing Publish > View Published, then selecting the output for the currently open Book. It is disabled if there is no book open.
  • From the Author-it main menu, by choosing Publish > Publishing Jobs... to display a list of all jobs you have published. By default only the last 7 days are displayed. Choose any job, then double-click to open the output. You can also view the containing folder, and the publisher log for that job.
  • By opening the Publisher directly from Publish > Start AuthorIT Publisher, then click the Jobs... button.

Note: The Publisher is a local version of our new Publishing Server, which will be released at a later stage. It will be server-installed and service network publishing queues, removing the need to publish jobs on your PC.
