Searching and Locating

When you want to find a related set of objects (especially when they're in more than one folder) or a specific object that you don't know the location of, don't forget Author-it's Object Search feature.

To Search for an Object

  1. Switch to the Search tab of the Library Explorer window.

  2. Tell Author-it which text to find. Remember that the more criteria you specify, the fewer objects will be found.

Use the Advanced Search to restrict your search criteria.

Some search criteria have drop-down lists which remember previous values you have used.

    You can even use wildcards:

    • Type * to represent a combination of characters, including no characters.
    • Type ? to represent any single character.
    • Use the boolean operators "And", "Or" and "Not" to specialize your search.
  3. Choose the Find Now button to start searching. Most searches take a matter of seconds. Exactly how long this takes depends on the number of objects in your Library, which search criteria you have specified, and the performance of your computer.
  4. The objects found as a result of your search are shown in the Library Explorer window

If Author-it could not find any matches, a message appears. Choose OK, reenter your criteria, and try again.

You can open and work with each found object as usual, and you can switch to the Folders or Tasks tabs with the found objects still displayed, so that you can drag them into folders or tasks.

Once you've found the object, you can also identify the folder the object is stored in.

To Locate an Object Found in a Search

  1. In the Search Results, select the object you want to locate.
  2. Right-click on the object, then select one of the following options from the shortcut menu:
    • Locate
    • Locate in 'Book Name' (where 'Book Name' is the Book currently open)

  3. If Locate is selected, the current folder will change to the folder that the object is contained in. The object you are locating will be highlighted.
  4. If Locate in 'Book Name' is selected (and the object exists in the currently open Book) the object will be highlighted in the Book Contents. This option is only available when a Book is open.
