Creating New Object Templates

Unlike standard objects, you cannot duplicate object templates. But to streamline the process, for consistency purposes, and to avoid the tedious task of having to set every single property individually, you can base the new template on another template to start with, then unselect this template which will allow you to make changes to properties that would otherwise be inherited:

  1. Create a new object
  2. Before naming it ensure you check the Make this Object a Template box. If you don't do this and you are creating a new Topic template, the object name is copied across to the Document, WinHelp, and HTML tabs meaning that all new Topics based on this template will inherit the Heading - and you end up with numerous Topics called "Fred" (where "Fred" is the name you've given your Template)
  3. Base the Template on another template and choose Apply. This then saves the new template with the same properties as the template you have based it on.
  4. Unselect the template that you based this new template on - this will allow you to adjust the properties that you need to.
  5. Make your changes and save the new template.

Note: The Related Topic groups are removed once you've unselected the template you based this template on. You can copy the Related Groups from another template by selecting the Related Topics tab, choosing Copy, selecting the relevant Related groups and choosing OK.
