Using Variables in Topics

Using Variables will save you time and energy. You can create Topics and place Variables amongst the text. List of Values, System, and Text Variables can also be used in Document, Help and HTML Headings.

Using Variables

  1. Open the Topic you wish to insert your Variable into.
  2. From the main menu choose the Tools > Variables > List. The Variables window appears displaying a list of available Variables.

    wordvar

  3. To Position the Variable placeholder into your Topic:
    • Drag and drop the Variable from the Variables window into the Topic Text at the required position.

    -OR-

    • Type the name of the Variable inside <angle brackets> within the Topic Text at the required position.

Note: Variable names may only contain the characters 0-9,a-z,A-Z and _ (underscore). Variable names are not case-sensitive. For example both <Contact> and <contact> represent the same Variable name.

Note: Only the name of the Variable appears inside the <angle brackets> in the Topic. It is not until your final output is produced that the value of the Variable is displayed.
