Creating a Hypertext Link

Many of the Hypertext Links you create will link to another topic in your Book.

To Create a Link To a Topic

  1. In the Topic Editor, select the text you want to link from, then insert a Hotspot. The Select an Object for the Hotspot window appears showing all available hypertext links and macro objects in your library.

Select an Object for the Hotspot

  2. Use the Show objects where targets are in options to filter the list of objects returned:
    • Current Book - displays all Hyperlink objects whose targets are in the current book
    • Current Folder - displays all Hyperlink or Macro objects that are in, or whose targets are in the current folder.
    • Whole Library - displays all Hyperlink or Macro objects in the library. This box is selected by default.

Note: Checking Whole Library disables the other check boxes.

  3. The object in the list with the closest matching text is automatically highlighted. This is case insensitive and the highlighted object is refreshed automatically on changing the check box options, or on selecting another folder in the Library Explorer.
  4. If the Link you want is listed already, select it then choose the OK button. Go directly to Step 13.
  5. Otherwise, select the Library Folder where you want to store your new Hypertext Link.
  6. Choose the New button. A new Hypertext Link window appears, with the General tab visible.
  7. Do not enter a Description because later Author-it will automatically insert the name of the topic you're linking to.
  8. From the Based On list, select the Jump Template.
  9. Switch to the Hypertext Links tab, and leave the window open.
  10. From your Book Contents or from a Folder in the Library Explorer, select the topic you want to link to, and then drag and drop it into the empty list at the top of the Hypertext Links tab. (You may need to move your windows a bit to do this). Now it should look something like this:

    Hypertext Link - Description

  11. Repeat Step 10 for as many target topics as you like. When you publish your document's outputs, only jumps to topics within the same document are included.
  12. Save your change by choosing OK. The Hypertext Link window closes, and your new Hypertext Link is applied to the highlighted text in the Topic Editor. You will notice that the hotspot text is marked with a blue underline.
  13. Save the changes to your topic.
