Inserting a Linked Graphic or OLE Object

When you insert pictures and OLE objects directly into the topic text using copy/paste, Author-it converts these to a File with an embedded picture or OLE object. Sometimes you want to be able to link directly to an external file rather than store the graphic in the Author-it library. Linking a File object also allows you the option of linking to a different file for each of the printed document, Windows Help system, and HTML.

Tip

Tip: The Linked URL File type enables you to link to graphics located on a webserver. Images from a webserver are included by defining the webserver folder location and the image name. Once added, the images can be used in any of the published outputs.

To Insert a Linked Graphic or OLE Object:

  1. Create a new File object.
  2. Switch to the Document tab and from the Source type choose Linked Picture, Linked OLE object, or Linked URL File. Then choose the Filename and Directory for the linked file.
  3. Repeat the steps for Windows Help and HTML tabs.

Note: HTML does not support linked OLE objects so that option is not available. You can use the same file in all outputs, or choose a different file for each.

  4. Choose OK to save and close the new File object. If you have a Topic open the new File object will be placed at the cursor position.
