Applying a Style To Text

Applying a character or paragraph style will change the formatting of the selected paragraphs or characters to that defined by the style.

There are differences between a character and paragraph style. A character style is applicable to one or more selected characters within a paragraph and will only change character formatting. A paragraph style is applicable to one or more paragraphs and will change both character and paragraph formatting, including bulleting and numbering.

Tip

You can use the Styles Toolbar to list all the styles you use frequently and just click the style you want, instead of having to select it from the list.

To Apply a Paragraph or Character Style

  1. Select the text you want to change.
    • If applying a paragraph style, position the cursor in the paragraph you want to change, or if you want to change more than one paragraph, select the paragraphs you want to change.
    • If applying a character style, select the characters you want to change.
  2. From the topic text toolbar, choose the style you want to apply from the drop-down list. Paragraph styles are preceded with ¶ and character styles are preceded with the letter a.
