Paragraph with no style applied in line 0 of Topic object 0

Problem

On publishing, the warning message Paragraph with no style applied in line 0 of Topic object 0 is displayed.

Reason

This occurs when a topic contains some non-Author-it formatting. This can often result from information being copied and pasted into Author-it from another source. It may also lead to the error "Selection may not extend across header/footer and page text" on publishing.

Solution

Check your publishing log. Each topic is listed in the log as it's published, and the problem topic is the one before the error message.

When you open the Topic, you'll often find the cursor jumps to the second character rather than the first. In some cases, it can be obvious there is text using non-Author-it formatting (it can be shown with a different font or maybe bold or italic attributes) but the topic status bar does not show a different style. In other cases, it is not as obvious.

To correct the problem:

  1. Open the topic and select the entire topic text (Ctrl + A),
  2. Cut the text (Ctrl + X),
  3. Choose Apply to save the topic,
  4. Paste the text back into the topic using the right-click Edit > Paste as Text option, and reapply styles.
  5. Save the changes.
  6. Republish. The error/warning should no longer occur.
