Resources and External Files

Files external to your library, such as linked graphics, can be included with the offline library as an "external resource".

  • To ensure that external files are included, you need to mark the folder containing the object as Make Available Offline.
  • If you are planning to publish documents you will also need to mark all relevant templates as available offline to include additional files.

When authoring in an offline situation, if an external file is not found at the path and with the filename that Author-it expects (and the file has been included because the object has been made available offline) the file will be recreated in the local temp directory.

For example:

  • When online, your book refers to a Word template kept at \\MyServer\Author-it 5\Data\Templates\authorit.dot.
  • When you create the offline library, Author-it adds a copy of this Word template into your offline library.
  • When you are working in your offline library, and this file is needed (say when publishing) the path is checked and found not to exist. A copy of this file is then unpacked from the offline library into a sub folder in the Temp directory and used instead.
