Evaluating Author-it Xtend

We encourage you to evaluate Author-it Xtend during your acceptance testing. If you wish to explore Author-it Xtend, you will need to download the separate installation file for the Author-it Service Manager and follow the instructions outlined in the Knowledge Center to install and configure the Indexing Service.

Note: Author-it Xtend only runs on SQL Server databases. Author-it 5.0 has also been optimized for SQL Server. Author-it still continues to support Jet databases but for optimal performance we recommend using SQL Server.

If you don't have access to SQL Server, you can use, Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. SQL Server Express enables you to work with Author-it libraries up to 4 GB in size and is freely available from the Microsoft website. Microsoft also provide full details on hardware and software requirements, installation steps, and a number of other resources. Once you have downloaded and installed both Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (database engine) and SQL Server Management Studio Express, create a blank SQL Server database, and simply follow the steps in the Author-it Knowledge Center to export your Jet library to SQL Server.
