Rules for Offline Authoring
Working in an offline library is almost the same as working in your main library. However, there are certain "rules" you need to be aware of:
- You can create new objects and templates, provided you have the relevant folder security permissions. When the offline library is checked in, these new objects are copied to their corresponding folder.
- You can only modify objects that you have checked out. If you have not checked out the object, it can only be opened in a "Read Only" state.
- You can only delete objects that you have created offline, and have not yet checked-in. If the object is used by another object, you cannot delete the object until you have removed the relationships involving that object. You cannot remove the relationships unless all the relevant objects have been checked out.
- You can create new styles and templates offline, but cannot check out existing styles or templates.
- You cannot create, modify, or delete folders.
- Administrative actions such as adding or modifying users, release states, security settings, and creating variables, are not updated in the main library upon checking in the offline library and will be lost.
- Tasks created in Project Manager and modified offline are not automatically updated in the main library upon checking in the offline library.
- You cannot create further offline libraries from an offline library.
Note: You should ensure that both the main library and your offline library are using the same build of Author-it. If an update is run on the main library but not on the offline library (or vice versa), the versions of your library may conflict. If this occurs, you can experience problems opening the offline library, or may not be able to check in the offline library again.
