Duplicating Objects

There are a couple of major reasons why you'll need to duplicate existing objects:

  • To create an object that is similar to an existing one, faster than setting its properties from scratch. Choose an existing object which has similar settings, duplicate the object, and then change only the settings that are different.
  • To change one instance of an object differently than all other instances of the same object. Because Author-it lets you use objects in more than one place, you have to duplicate the object to be able to make changes in one place independently from other places.

To Duplicate an Object:

  1. Open the Library Explorer and select the object(s) you want to duplicate.
  2. Choose Manage > Versioning > Duplicate. A message appears, asking you to confirm your action.
  3. Choose Yes to continue. Author-it creates an exact duplicate of the original object in the current folder, with "Copy of " inserted at the beginning of the description, and a new object number.
  4. Change any settings, including the new object's Description, then save your changes.
