Changing a Style Object's Properties

When a Style is not quite right, it's easy to change it. This is the type of job that you won't need to do often, and we recommend that if you're sharing work in a team only some people are allowed to do this, to maintain control of your organization's standards.

Note: When you change a Style, every place that it is used in your Library is updated immediately, so be sure that the change is appropriate in all situations. Sometimes, you need to first create a new style that is similar to the old one, by duplicating the existing style, and then modify the duplicated style.

To Change a Style:

1. Close any topics which uses the Style you're changing, or your changes can not be saved.
2. Open the Style you want to change.
3. Change the Style's settings:
   • The Style Definition tab controls how the style looks in Author-it's Editor. For paragraph styles, it also defines the outline level at which the style appears in your document.
   • The Help tab controls how the style looks in your Windows Help output.
   • The Web tab controls how the style appears in all Web outputs (including HTML Help).
   • The Print tab specifies the name of the style applied from the MS Word publishing template, but does not otherwise define any settings. The style settings for your Printed output are defined in the template itself.

     Note: Make sure that the type of style (paragraph or character) matches in Author-it and in Word, or you'll get endless hours of entertainment when publishing your Printed output.

4. Save your changes. If you have made any changes to the settings in the Style Definition tab, then all topics using that Style are updated, which may take a while.
