Related Topics in My Template Disappear When I Base a Topic on that Template

For technical reasons, inheritance of Related Topic Groups is limited to only one level. You can only inherit from parent to child, not from grandparent to child. So, when you create a topic template which is based on another template (let's say the Normal template), the new template inherits the Related Topic Groups from the Normal template. However, any topics based on your new template will contain no Related Topic Groups.

Solution

There are two solutions:

  • Do not base your new template on another, and only copy Related Topic Groups from that source template to your new template. Use the COPY button on the Related Topics tab of the topic to do this. Topics based on your new template will inherit those Related Topic Groups, but because you have broken the chain of inheritance, your new template and all topics based on it will not be updated when changes are made to the source template.

    -or-

  • Do base your new template on another, then copy Related Topic Groups from the source template to each topic you create. Your new template and all topics based on it will update correctly when changes are made to the source template.
