Before You Start Importing

Before you begin importing you will need:

  • If importing from Word documents, you will need Microsoft Word 2000 or higher installed on your computer.

Note: If you don't have MS Word installed, you can save the document as RTF using another machine (that does have MS Word installed), or using a Word to RTF convertor. The document can then be imported in RTF format.

  • If importing from FrameMaker MIF documents, you will need Adobe FrameMaker 5 or higher installed on your computer, and the MIF Import Filter. An evaluation version of the MIF import filter is installed by default with all Author-it Editions. The evaluation MIF filter substitutes part of text with random phrases as your document is imported. The resulting imported data is not usable, but does let you "evaluate" the import process. We recommend you do not use your production library when testing this feature. To remove this restriction you will need to purchase a license for the MIF filter.
  • An open Author-it Library. If this is your first document then you should start with a new library. Otherwise, open an existing library.
  • The file or files you are going to import, including any linked graphics.
  • Available memory. Importing can use a lot of memory. How much memory it takes depends on the nature and complexity of the documents being imported. You may need to restart Author-it, close other applications and perhaps restart Windows to free up more memory.
