Publishing to PDF

Provided you have a supported PDF driver installed, you can publish to PDF format.

Author-it currently supports the following PDF drivers:

  • Adobe Acrobat Distiller 6.0
  • Adobe Acrobat Distiller 7.0
  • Fineprint pdfFactory Pro V2
  • Microsoft Office 2007 Save as PDF add-in

Using Microsoft Word's Save as PDF

Author-it 5.3 supports publishing to PDF using the Microsoft Office 2007 Save as PDF add-in. Hyperlinks and mini toc links (links to topics under "In this Chapter" or "In this Section") are clickable in the published document when it is viewed online.

To install the add-in, open Microsoft Word 2007 and click the Office Button, choose Save As > Find add-ins for other file formats. Follow the instructions to download and install the Save As PDF add-in.

Important: When installed, the Save as PDF add-in is used instead of any other print drivers you have installed.

What if I use a different PDF driver?

You can still publish a Word document and then convert it to PDF with any standard PDF conversion software.

Alternatively, you can add a macro to your Word template and Author-it will execute this when publishing your document to PDF. The macro is launched automatically if the ConvertToPDF Sub procedure is present in the Author-it template.

Note: This procedure is only called when publishing to PDF. It is ignored if publishing to Word.

How does it work?

Simply select PDF from the Publishing menu. If you have multiple PDF drivers installed, Author-it will use the default printer or detect and use the driver that was installed first.

Where does the formatting and layout come from?

Author-it reads the styles and autotext entries defined in your Word Publishing template and uses these to ensure a consistent look between your printed outputs.
